8 - Mile
Maximum depth: 20 m.
8 mile is a reef not known to many divers, but contains varieties of coral, nudibranchs and beautiful structures well worth a visit.
It is also known as Ramsey’s Reef, named after Dr. Peter Ramsey who discovered it a number of years ago while he was doing some side-scan sonar readings for scientific purposes.
Ramsey’s isn’t dived on all that often because it is so close to
9-Mile, which is normally a preferred reef because it has more pronounced structures and the world famous green coral tree.
We normally will div
e on this reef only with experienced divers, who want the opportunity to try something different. Because it is dived on so seldom, it can be full of interesting surprises. Although we always had the feeling it should be an ideal location for sighting sharks, we still haven’t found a shark there!
There is one little hollow which often has juvenile Batfish in it, which are always spectacular.

We have also found some unusual nudibranchs there such as Diversidoris aurantionodulosa and the white Notodoris. Neville Coleman thinks this is a rare albino form of Notodoris citrina, but we have seen this one on 4 separate occasions, therefore we believe it is a new species (see pictures).
