Stringer Depth: 14 m
Stringer is part of the 2-Mile complex. One of the closest reefs to the beach. We can only dive on it when conditions are v
ery good, because it is very exposed to currents and surge. It consists of 3 small reefs:
- Small Stringer is about 20 m long and about 15 m wide,
- Big Stringer is about 125 m long and about 15 – 20 m wide,
- Third Stringer is about 20 m long and only about 7 m wide
Small Stringer is almost like a big round rock and ‘infested’ with Blue-banded snappers, Flame goatfish, and lots of Sergeant-Major’s. The Sergeant Major’s are starting to nest at this time of the year, so divers need to ensure that they avoid their nesting patches, otherwise all their eggs are
being consumed by the Wrasses.
After spending about 20 minutes on Small Stringer we normally move over to Big Stringer, which requires a 20 m swim across the sand. Here we visit 2 small caves on the northern tip of the reef, where we often will find Morays and Potato Bass and Brindle Bass. We will then swim about 40 m to a larger cave, where there are often big rays. We need to make sure we don’t kneel on a Marbled Electric Ray by a
ccident, otherwise we would be in for a big surprise. This area is often patrolled by a couple of Grey Reef Sharks.
Towards the end of big Stringer are a number of large pot holes which are occupied by numerous Stingrays, and once our divers were pushed out of the way by a large Loggerhead Turtle which objected to them being in his bedroom.
Third Stringer is a reef, mainly consisting of different sea weeds which are inhabited by numerous Trigger Fish, and we often will find some Pipe Fish and rather unusual Nudibranchs.
