Mellow Yellow

Maximum depth: 18,5 m.

Mellow Yellow is located on the southern tip of Bikini. It is a long, thin reef, so the dive always consists of a relaxed drift with the current, and that is where we get the name ‘mellow’ from. The ‘yellow’ part of the name comes from the huge shoals of Bluebanded Snappers, Yellow Snappers and Dory Snappers that congregate in the water to feed on the plankton the current brings out over Stringer and Quarter-Mile . There is a resident yellow-edged Lyretail with a shark Ramora attached to him, which we have been visiting for the last 3 months.

Often on this dive we are greeted by a huge Loggerhead turtle who likes to sleep in one of the crevasses. The photograph on the left shows what happened the one day when he was disturbed by another, slightly smaller Loggerhead. They ended up by having a fairly intense argument which only stopped when the one turtle had to surface because after his sleep he was low on air.

We are occasionally fortunate enough to see a Porcupine Ray which is extremely rare (photo right).
