Bikini generalBikini-Mellow-Yellow-070502-013

The first reef in our introduction is, of course, Bikini. It is Colin’s absolute favourite. It is part of the 2-Mile complex, although it is a separate reef. We only started diving on it about 4 years ago. Named by Neville Ayliff, because: ‘There is not much to it, but it hides beautiful things’.

A long, thin reef, ideal for diving in strong currents (as long as you realize before the dive in which direction the current goes). It is inhabited by many different species of Nudibranchs, a proliferation of unusual and small underwater life, but it can also produce some big surprises occasionally, like Whale Sharks or Mantas.

On Bikini are 4 different dive sites, namely:

Bikini (depth 22m) has a nice ledge which is home to the Rhinopias frondosa and some beautiful pink coloured Paper fish, there are always lots of Morays (up to 6 different species) and Shrimps at the cleaning stations.

Middle Bikini (depth 20m) often has Devil Firefish, Blue-banded Parrot fish, and quite often we will encounter the red-barred Rubberlips (with a huge yellow mouth)

Mellow Yellow (depth 18m) is home to huge shoals of the yellow fish, as it has a gentle current flowing out from Stringer and Quartermile, bringing a lot of plankton with it on which these fish feed.

Hop Scotch (depth 27m) is a shorter dive and occasionally we encounter a blue and yellow (male) Ribbon Eel.

We also often find the beautiful Nudibranch Phillidia oscellata.
