Quarter Mile

Maximum depth 14 m

This reef is the closest to shore, and is host in summer (December to March) to the pregnant female Ragged Tooth Shark (Sand Tiger Shark) These sharks gather together for part of their gestation to slow their metabolism down and on occasion over 60 individuals have been observed at the same time. Restrictions are placed on dives to this reef during this time to protect the sharks. They are very curious and will approach within touching range of divers, who obviously are not allowed to touch the sharks. Wonderful photographs are always produced by divers on this reef. Turtles, game fish, other sharks and nudibranchs are often observed on this reef.

7 Mile Reef

Maximum depth 23m

This reef is one of the most popular dive sites in Sodwana. The northern wall is rated as one of the top 10 individual dive sites in the world. Sheer walls, beautiful corals at amphitheatre, Pineapple and Paper fish in Lion fish Cave all add to the allure of 7 mile. Added to this is the very good chance of snorkelling with dolphins on the way and the chance of seeing humpback whales in winter. This is a dive not to be missed. 7 mile has a number of different dive sites, one of which includes 2 mushroom shaped rocks which attract huge shoals of fish. Sharks are often observed on the dive. Numerous trumpet fish in their various hunting camouflage can be seen and occasionally the beautiful golden moray is spotted.

Should only be dived when visibility and conditions are good.

9 Mile Reef

Green Coral Tree (22m)

The famous green tree is on the outside edge of the reef and attracts large numbers of fish that give it the appearance of a living Christmas tree. The reef structure contains many gullies, swim-throughs and drop offs which give all sorts of creatures great hideaways so a slow meander down the outside edge is most rewarding.

Breaking Waters (15m-6m)

Breaking waters as the name implies can only be dived on calm windless days, but shelters rays, turtles as well as numerous varieties of nudibranchs and moray eels.
